How big are West Ham?

We know how we see ourselves and are percieved in the UK but I am more thinking abroad.
Of course players want to come to us for higher wages and what the Premier League can offer, but who do we compare against in terms of size in other countries.
For instance Lazio, are we bigger than them and others of comparable size and history etc?

we are the fourth biggest club in our own town...which sounds shit..which it is..
but we are a great club..despite the wank owners..past and present

We are very similar to the 20 rich list, he's only worth 6 billion. One of the richest clubs in world football with a huge loyal fan base . But when you look at our success compared to others in England and abroad we are pathetic.

I have a largely similar experience. Grew up with mostly Italians and a couple Portuguese football fans (second generation). Any "British"-descended kids were Liverpool, Man United, Celtic, or Rangers. Most would not have known West Ham at all. Only the older first generation immigrants would have known, and they gave me grief for not supporting a club more in line with my family background.

I think as an iconic London club with hooligan films and working class roots we have bigness. None of our owners have matched the potential no matter what they've said.

Sorry probably tried to cram too much into one sentence.
The football fans I knew six, seven years ago tended to be of foreign ancestry, but not British, or they were first generation immigrants. Italians and Latin Americans being the biggest groups.
I would mention West Ham and that we were an English and they would ask if we played in the Premier League. Or I would say I followed a Premier League team and they would ask which one and then not recognise the name.
I did get stopped for wearing West Ham scarf once by an EPS (Edmonton Police Service) officer originally from Bolton. He let me go with a warning.

I'm an American and a West Ham supporter since 1999. Knowledge and support of the Premier League has steadily increased here over the years (especially in the last 5-10 years), but knowledge, particularly of history, is VERY shallow.
Most people don't know West Ham to be as big a club as it is because they are too new to the league and only comprehend recent history. Mostly bandwagon fans of Man City, Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, and, sadly, Spurs. Spurs definitely have support disproportionate to the actual size of the club and its support in England. I think (and I am NOT making a negative comment, just an observation, so don't go trying to kick me off the board) that Spurs high level of support in the US is in part a factor of the Jewish connection. We have a large Jewish population in the US (largest by far outside of Israel) and some are naturally inclined to support Spurs because of this connection.
While it's true that most Americans, even nominal Premier League fans, have little comprehension of how big West Ham is, they also have no idea about the size of clubs like VIlla or Leeds. Most probably think of Leicester is a bigger club based on the fact that they recently won the league and have two or three players who are everyday names.

I get the idea that the Premier League is bigger than when I left. Along with "soccer" in general.
